Items Shipping Tomorrow

For those of you who don't know, I work full-time and have a family, so things never move as quickly as I'd like. But I'm spending the day getting packages ready to ship tomorrow. As soon as that's complete, I'll post more items ready for sale and auction. Next up will be pages from Capt. America, Dracula (Dark Horse), and Bob Marley; more comics signed by Stan Lee and Gene; and some sketches.

Still unsold are the cover recreations posted below. Are we pricing these too high?

Health Update

I teeter back and forth between discussing Gene’s condition, and to what extent, because it’s deeply personal and often morose. But many of you continue writing to ask and I can’t reply personally to everyone… and Gene said it’s okay to keep you—his fans and friends—up to date. Thus:

Gene was in terrible pain yesterday when I phoned and it was fortunate that I called when I did. He was experiencing debilitating stomach pains and my immediate call to his son (and his son’s immediate call to the facility where Gene stays) resulted, we suspect, in quicker attention. I phoned Gene back and remained on the phone with him until the doctor arrived, which was only ten minutes later—an eternity to Gene, though, who was in genuine agony.

Gene then underwent a para synthesis—a procedure to release the pressure of the fluid that had amassed inside of him as a result of his failing liver. His son, who is by his side, reports that Gene looks much better today, but the swelling has returned to his legs, a condition that his doctor says is likely to continue.

Gene has good days and bad days. He remains highly motivated and wants nothing more than to get back to drawing. “This too will pass,” he said yesterday while in the throes of agony, barely able to breathe let alone speak. This man never abandons hope.

Then this afternoon, “I’m doing a lot better!” Gene said. “Really and truly. They took out two liters of water from my stomach. And the morphine took root and thank God I’ve been fine ever since. I’m going home. I’m not sure when but as soon as I feel like I can manage it, I’m going home.”

Health Update

Gene sounded better this morning than he has in weeks. He's looking at a top hospice facility and comfortable with this new chapter in his life. No illusions--just positive energy. And he wants to draw! So we're looking at setting up his new room with a drawing board and everything he needs.

Sadly, my own father-in-law entered the hospital this morning with a serious issue, throwing everything into spin. I am unable to work on the auction right now. Please send bids but be patient waiting for updates.

Gene Colan Garage Sale Ends Tonight

We we halt bidding on these items at 11 pm tonight. Then new items will be posted in Round Two next week. If you are participating in this, thank you! If you're just watching, please spread the word of this auction. Gene is not coming home--he is going into hospice and will not likely be drawing any more, only signing.

Art missing? Books lost? Anything outstanding?

It happens from time to time and when it does, we're sorry. If we owe you *anything* at all, please let me know. And if you are one of the hundreds of people who have purchased something and received exactly what you ordered and are happy, a comment here wouldn't hurt.

As far as I know, there are a few commissions that Gene never started, and those funds can be released immediately. Gene informs me that the Brother Blood / Dracula piece was "mostly done" but I've yet to see it. When I retrieve the art next week, I will contact the owner and we'll either give it to you for less or refund your full purchase (your choice).

Gene Moves to Rehab

Gene has left the hospital and is now in rehab. But he will not be going home. His family and he are deciding on an appropriate place where he can live the rest of his life comfortably with proper care. Despite this, Gene remains positive. He would like to draw again but is too weak and the drugs that block his pain don't make that possible now. Nevertheless he is determined not to be a financial burden on his children and wants to do what he can to pay his own way, so limited signings will continue. At his family's request, Gene's whereabouts will remain private and everyone is asked to respect that. If you are an old friend, contact me and I'll put you in touch with Gene... Or you can send a letter to him through me.

...And a tremendous outpuring of love. Thank you. I have been reading and responding to email for three hours. Spoke with Gene, too (he was very weak but sends his love). I have *not* been able to open every email--there are just too many--but I am updating the list of items below and current high bids based on the emails that I got to. It's 2:30 a.m. now and I need sleep so I'll catch up on the rest tomorrow. (from my original post) I spent several hours with Gene this morning. He wasn’t under the influence of any pain killers so he was lucid and jovial, but grew short of breath several times—and every now and again he’d grimace in pain. The attending nurse finally had no choice but to put him back on the morphine and that was it—Gene was fast asleep.

Despite his legendary optimism, Gene’s situation is tenuous. His family hopes he can undergo a procedure early this week that may alleviate his pain. Regardless, it’s unlikely that my pal will be drawing for anyone anytime soon.

To continue generating what might become much-needed funds, we are selling off the last of Gene’s artwork, as well as some books and comics. Gene hopes to continue signing comics for the CGC Signature Series. If you have comics that you would like to put through this process, please contact me ASAP.

Gene Colan Hospitalized: Update

I'm getting endless calls and email about Gene and can't answer all of you so please check in here for updates if you're concerned.

Gene had a radiology procedure late this afternoon to stop internal bleeding; the procedure was a success. Gene's back in ER tonight waiting to be admitted. His family will not be releasing his whereabouts nor should anyone; Gene and his children should not be disturbed. Well-wishers may contact me and I will forward their messages as appropriate.

Gene will not be taking any new commissions going forward; if he has not completed one of yours yet, please stand by for refund details. You will certainly get your money back--and quickly--if Gene is incapable of finishing something. If the work was not started yet, it's unlikely that he will ever get to it...but you never know with Gene. G-d has given him miracles before and Gene likes to share them. I know that if he is capable, he'll want to finish his work. I haven't spoken to him since Monday but I know the first thing he'll say is, "Boy, I can't wait to get home and get back to the drawing board." He loves what he does.

It's two ayem right now and I obviously can't sleep. I'm very concerned about my friend.

Gene Colan Hospitalized

Gene Colan went to the ER this morning at 3 a.m. He was having trouble breathing and was in terrible pain. His son tells me that he is in stable condition.
